Patty and Matt’s Wedding at Bartram’s Garden

This time last year Matt and Patty were the first wedding I booked for this fall and I’ve been looking forward to this weekend ever since. The venue was the wonderful Bartram’s Garden on the banks of the Schyulkill river in Philadelphia — home to 18th century naturalist John Bartram and the first arboretum in the new nation. Here’s a little preview of their wedding day…

Aimee and Kevin’s Wedding at the Hewick Plantation

The Hewick Plantation was built in 1678 by Christopher Robinson and in it’s day was a gathering place for leading families of Virginia. Over 300 years later the plantation became a gathering place for Aimee — an 8-generation descendent of Mr. Robinson — and Kevin, their families, and friends as they celebrated their wedding on a beautiful late summer afternoon.

Framed by magnificent old trees flanking the driveway, Aimee and Kevin were married in front of the Mansion and celebrated the evening on the beautiful grounds.

Sam and Daniel

Here’s a quick preview of Sam and Daniel’s wedding at Washington Hebrew Congregation. I met Sam a couple of years ago when she joined DCMTB, the mountain bike team that I’ve ridden for since 2005 and now sponsor. Sam left the team when she stopped racing cross country and switched over to downhill racing but it was great to hear from her a couple of months ago about being a part of documenting her wedding day.

Since we didn’t have time before the wedding, we’re going to be meeting in a couple of weeks for a post-wedding engagement shoot on their farm near Frederick and I can’t wait to spend some more time with this wonderful couple.

Mike and Bonnie in Georgetown

Mike and Bonnie are getting married in just a couple of weeks, but they hadn’t done an engagement session. To get some fun pictures of the two of them, and give them a chance to get used to having a photographer following them around, we met up in Georgetown on a morning earlier this week and spend some time walking along the river and exploring the back alleys below M street looking for fun places to stop and take a picture or two.

Georgetown early in the morning was a great location. The streets were calm, the riverfront was quiet and we had a great time finding lots of great brick and stone walls, steps, and hidden little spots to stop. This is definitely a location we’ll be revisiting and exploring more in the future.

We finished the morning off with a stop for coffees and croissants at Dean & Deluca to talk through their wedding plans. I’m looking forward to being a part of their wedding in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned for a look at that later.

Laura and Peter’s Washington DC Engagement Session

No, you’re not seeing double. As a follow up to Matt and Patty’s engagement session a couple of weeks ago I did an engagement session for Matt’s twin brother Peter and his fiance Laura. I’m going to be photographing their wedding in October just north of Philadelphia. Before the couple move to the big apple next month we thought we’d commemorate their time in Washington, DC with an engagement session around the monuments.

We started early and were blessed with a cool morning, a surprise for July. We started at the tidal basin and worked our way through the FDR memorial towards the Lincoln Memorial as we were all reminded of what what a beautiful city Washington, DC can be (especially when you avoid the tourists). Read on for a few previews from their session and click on the thumbnails to see more…

Matt and Patty’s U Street Engagement Session

Matt and Patty have a wedding planned for this fall at Bartram’s Garden in Phildadelphia. For their engagement session, though, we stuck a little closer to home and walked around their neighborhood. Washington DC’s U street neighborhood is one of the city’s most popular these days with a diverse mix of cultures and a wide range of stores, restaurants, and bars. We started at the north end of the neighborhood at Meridian Hill Park with it’s beautiful Italianate fountain and the walked south towards U Street — stopping at the odd graffiti covered brick wall.

We took a quick pit stop at Ben’s Chili Bowl for chili cheese half smokes. Ben’s is a local institution but I have to reluctantly admit that in spite of living in DC for quite a while before moving out to Silver Spring that I’d never been there. It was well worth the visit and made for an interesting location to capture some candid shots. Once we were finished at Ben’s we walked down 14th to finish our shoot on the stoop of Matt and Patty’s apartment and talk about their wedding plans over a glass of bourbon.

Lindsey and Jarred’s Ocean City Wedding

Here’s a quick sneak peak of Lindsey and Jarred’s wedding from this weekend. The weather was looking a little iffy for a ceremony on the beach in Ocean City, but right on cue the rain that was looming disappeared and we had a beautiful evening for a celebration in front of the ocean. After the ceremony the party got started and even a fire alarm couldn’t stop it — though we did wait outside for a few minutes while the fire department came to reset the alarm.

Click on the images below to see pictures of Lindsey and Jarred’s day.

Michelle and David’s Wilmington Wedding

Michelle and David were married this past weekend, surrounded by friends and family, in a beautiful ceremony at Wilmington’s Church of the Holy City.

After the ceremony we found some fun little spots to take pictures around the neogothic architecture of the church…

…and then walked a couple of blocks to a local park to take care of the group pictures, stopping along the way for a couple more pictures of the happy couple.

Once the pictures were done everyone got down to the business of celebrating at the Delaware Center for Comtemporary Arts, a fun venue on the Wilmington riverfront for a creative couple. There were heartfelt toasts, touching dances, some delicious gelato, and a lot of getting down.

Keep reading for a preview gallery of their wedding day

Aimee and Kevin

Aimee and Kevin’s engagement session last weekend was a great way to start this years wedding season. I’ll be spending next weekend in Wilmington with Michelle and David, but for now I can’t stop looking through the images from last weekend’s explorations of the park across the street from Aimee and Kevin’s new house.

We spent a few hours wandering around the park, stopping a piles of wood, old silos, falling down walls, old barns, and a nearby antique store.

There were a couple of times that one of us wondered out loud if everyone had a recent tetnus shot, but in the end we got a great set of pictures that show how much Aimee and Kevin mean to each other and I’m really looking forward to helping document their wedding this fall.

Click below for a gallery of some more photographs from their engagement session.

Michelle and David – Wilmington Engagement Session

I had a great engagement shoot with Michelle and David in their hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. We started in the gardens of the Delaware Art Museum and then after checking out their wedding and reception venues, headed down to the Russel W. Petersen Wildlife Refuge on the banks of the Christiana river and then finished the day with a walk along the Wilmington riverfront.

I’m looking forward to helping document their wedding day next march, but for now here’s a gallery of a few more of my favorites from the shoot.
