Asher James

Asher James

Jenn and Brady have welcomed a new addition to their family, Asher James. Jenn is an old friend and former colleague of Heather’s from her days in Philadelphia and we stopped by this weekend, on the way home from a weekend of visiting Sam’s grandparents, for their newborn and family shoot.

Maya

Maya

This was another busy weekend and the highlight was Sunday morning’s session with Maya and her parents Cecelia and Yuval. We had great light, so I left the lights packed up and shot everything natural light. Maya was a very cooperative subject and I could swear she was already getting ready to start breaking out [...]

Michal and Paul – A Philadelphia Wedding at the Physick House

Michal and Paul – A Philadelphia Wedding at the Physick House

Every time I photograph a wedding I feel honored to be invited into the relationships that the bride and groom have with their friends and family and this Saturday, photographing Michal and Paul in Philadelphia was no exception. Michal and Paul chose to be married in the Physick House in the middle of society hill’s quaint bricks and cobblestones before moving back across the country to their mutual hometown of Seattle. It was clear that they’ve touched many lives as they’ve moved through their own and they were surrounded on their wedding day by new friends and old, classmates, neighbors, and family.

Sean

Sean

On Saturday I got to shoot the first son of a couple of good friends, Matt & Katie. Sean arrived a couple of weeks ago and while we were shooting, spent some time making sure that the new Mom and Dad knew who the boss was. The new addition to the family is adorable and while we were shooting in the “studio” we set up in the bedroom he pulled some really funny faces. From the looks of it, he’s going to be one lucky kid.

Teddy, Take Two… This Time with Mom & Dad

Teddy, Take Two… This Time with Mom & Dad

This weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Teddy for the second time. I did a newborn shoot for Hillary & Steve last summer right after Teddy was born and he already had the nickname “Teddy the Tank”. Eight month’s later he’s a curious little guy who’s really living up to that nickname. We had a lot of fun wandering around the always beautiful Brookside Gardens looking for little pools of early evening light — and trying to stay out of the way of the wedding that was going on in the fragrance garden. Teddy was very patient, in spite of being kept out later than usual so I could shoot one more setup and even flashed his “Teddy Monster” smile for the camera right as we were finishing up. Keep reading for a gallery of pictures from the shoot.

Laura & Josh

Laura & Josh

Laura & Josh met years ago, drifted apart, and then reconnected around the same time that Heather and I met. Laura and Heather had been very close friends for years so Josh & I both got to meet the rest of their friends at the same time. Last summer Josh & Laura got engaged and asked if I would shoot their wedding, a big leap at the time, since I had never shot one.

This weekend we went up to a Lancaster, Pennsylvania to be there with Laura and Josh and the rest of those friends. While Heather was at Laura’s side, I was making pictures. The wedding was exactly what you’d expect from them: quirky, unconventional, and a riotously good time with great food and drink to boot. Laura’s dress and Josh’s tie was sewn by Laura’s mother, from the fabric of her own wedding dress, Josh’s Mom made the cake, and many friends and family made cookies for the desert table. The venue, the Yellow Barn at the Landis Valley Museum was a photographic treasure trove, and while the overcast and blustery day wasn’t the best for the guests, it was a goldmine for me.

Read on for a preview gallery of pictures from the day…

Bouldering

Bouldering

In the name of trying something new, I followed my little brother out to Northwest Branch this weekend and shot him as he worked on some bouldering problems. The light was overhead by the time we made it out to the park, and with no tree canopy the transitions from the shady side of the rocks to the light were harsh. On the upside I was able to use the flare a couple of times when shooting with the fisheye.

Elijah

Elijah threw his parents a curveball when he showed up a couple of weeks early and threw us some more when we started the shoot on Friday. We adjusted, left the usual script, kept shooting, and came up with some images that I really like. You can check out a few more in the gallery [...]

Chasing Legends

Chasing Legends

This Saturday I spent the day shooting for Gripped Films on the set of a sequence they’re filming for their next documentary, Chasing Legends. We were in Georgetown, shooting on one of the streets that still have cobbles and trolley rails, both of which made for some challenges for the riders and caused at least [...]

Save Face; Give Hope

Save Face; Give Hope

Thanks to all who came out to the one day project. Turnout was a little smaller than we’d hoped, but we still raised over $500 for organizations involved in Haitian and Chilean earthquake relief and we had some fun in the process. We changed the lighting up a couple of times and tried out some [...]

Save Face. Give Hope. The One Day Project.

The One Day Project has been rescheduled for March 14th Sunday, March 14th we’ll be taking pictures that we hope will make a difference. Maybe not in the lives of the people we’re shooting (though we hope they’ll like the portraits we make) but in the lives of people we can’t shoot. The earthquake in [...]

Autumn…

Autumn…

There’s something special about the fall with it’s crisp air and kalediscope of colors and textures. We had a great time this autumn with a bunch of outdoor shoots and spent lots of time out running around and playing in leaves in parks.

One fun location we used this autumn was Brookside Gardens. The kids had fun exploring the lakes, garden, and especially the pagoda on the island in the lake.

Rock Creek park and Silgo Creek parks let us get into the slightly wilder side of nature and Glen Echo park in Rockville has no end of things to amuse a 2 year old.

The Bakers Dozen Portraits

Shot at the Leesburg Bakers Dozen, a 13-hour mountain bike race, in 2009. A selection of these images were shown at Artomatic 2009 in Washington, DC, where dc.decider.com picked them as one of 5 installations to see amongst nearly 1000 in the show. They were also shown as part of “The Bike Project: A Visual, [...]
